The President’s Message

Happy New Year to all the Seniors of Oak Island! I hope you all had a great time this holiday   season and have enjoyed (as I know I did) all of the many things that our Senior Center provided   during the year.

We had a great year of sales; thanks to all the crafters and Carol Jackson’s constant attention to all of the details for the many events that went on during the year.   I’m sure she was very relieved to see the January closing for a well-deserved rest period.

I’m looking forward to the renovations that are taking place while the shop is closed, as I’m certain all of us will enjoy a newly revitalized center.  2012 will afford us new opportunities as we continue to     improve not only our building, but the services and activities that will be made available.

Encourage your neighbors and friends to join us and fill their lives with the possibilities of enjoying meals, games and just plain entertainment.  See you around…………..

Helen Cashwell

President

Members are encouraged to attend our Board meetings and the monthly dinner meetings.

Please Note:  Due to the renovations going on at the Senior Center in January, there will be no Monthly Dinner Meeting or Board Meeting that month.  Make a note of the dates below:

            Next Monthly Covered Dish Meeting:

February 21st at 5:30 pm at the Senior Center

            Next Board Meeting:

February 23rd at 4:30 pm at the Senior Center

Don’t forget!

The Senior Center will be closed for the entire month of January, 2012 for renovations.  We will be having the ceiling repaired and new lights.

From The “Unsung Heroes” Department

For several years now, George and Gail Tittle have been the “Official Counters”  at our annual election of the Board of Officers and Trustees.  This year, George and Gail went through nearly 100 ballots and carefully enumerated votes for 10 separate candidates, plus write-ins.  Over 1,000 choices had to be tabulated.  All of this was done while the rest of us sat at our tables, finishing off our dinners, and listening to the recognition of those who had contributed to the running of the Senior Center throughout the year.

We all owe a big Thank You” to George and Gail.  Thank You!

Senior Center Christmas Party—December 11, 2011

Fifty-two seniors attended the Christmas Party this year and enjoyed the good food and fellowship. Gifts were exchanged and we had fun playing “Dirty Santa”:   In its most  basic form, the game play is as follows—Each participant supplies one wrapped gift. The first person to choose a gift opens their gift for all to see. The second person then chooses whether to open a wrapped gift or “steal” the previously opened gift. If a person has their gift stolen, they also have the option of choosing  a wrapped gift or stealing an unwrapped one. When all gifts have been unwrapped, the game ends.

One particular gift was stolen many, many times.  Can you guess which one?

Meet The Members:  “Rosie Attitude”

This month’s MTM article is about Rosie Attitude. Although many of you have seen her at the Senior Center, now you will get the “Rest of the Story “, as

the late Paul Harvey used to say in his broadcasts.

Rosie was discovered by Pat Pavco.  Under the direction of Pat, she began to take form.  You could call this a “make-over”.  With the help of Maureen Angers and Dorothy Stern, she morphed from a rather plain Jane to the glamorous person she is today.

I first met Rosie late one Sunday afternoon as I entered the Senior Center to take care of some computer problems. It was dark in the main meeting room and I saw her sitting in a recliner. My first thought was that she had been attending some sort of class or meeting, had passed out and the other people had left the building and locked up, leaving her there alone and forgotten.

Anyone who has met Rosie will tell you that she is a woman of few words. However, they will also tell you that she is a wonderful listener. If you speak to her she looks back at you, and there is no doubt or animosity on her face.

The contractor who is handling the Center’s current renovation told me “I needed to get into the building, but it was locked. I  looked into the front window and saw this lady sitting in a chair.  I rapped on the window and said ‘I need to get in. Can you let  me in?’ There was no response, so I left.”

Rosie gets along with everyone, and customers doing their shopping in our Craft Shop look twice at her, wondering what her true story is. If you are questioning if Rosie meets the age requirement to be a member of our Center, one look at her will answer that question. Surely, Rosie is no spring chicken.

Did You Go to the Christmas Parade This Year?

If you did, you saw the very first float entry from your Senior Center!  Those involved with the project did an outstanding job.  John Polites and Bill Wasik came up with the theme, and Maureen Angers made all of the banners. The “Keep Christ in Christmas” on the front of the truck was done by Diane Polites, and the scripture verses on the side of  the truck were done by Ann Evans.  Most of the decorating (the hard stuff) was done by Sue and Bill Wasik, Allen Steele, and John Polites. Allen Steele drove the truck in the parade, and we had our own personal Grinch  - (Linda Drye) in full grinchy costume!  Everyone said they had a great time doing this and are already planning for next year’s parade!

Thoughts from the Craft Shop Manager

Welcome to the New Year!  Let’s hope it will be a great one!  We have so many good people in our  Senior Center—it will just have to be good

Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the work to begin on our ceiling and new lighting.  Parts have been ordered, but not received yet.  Hopefully, everything will be done before it’s time to open up again in February.  We always hear about the scarcity of jobs; yet when you give someone the work, it always seems to be a hassle to get it done . . . . go figure.

2011 was a good year; even though it was unusually slow during the summer.  It did pick up some in the fall and December was quite active.  I’m not sure we outdid sales of 2010, but we came close.  Thanks to everyone who shopped at the Center for gifts.  We really do have an excellent selection.  We are most fortunate to have such talented crafters to fill our shop with goods.  We’ll be glad to welcome them all back in February.

I’m looking forward to a busy schedule in February; we’ll get back to all of our usual activities and hope to add more.  For our Friday night movies, I would like to show four previous Academy Award winners.  Following that theme, I’d also like to get a group together to watch the Academy Awards show this year, which will take place on Sunday, February 26th.  Hope all of you ladies like this idea; I’m not sure any of the guys would be caught dead attending!

We will have our annual Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 5th.  We’ll have soup, salad, dessert, and lots of fun.  If I can get some volunteers to bring soup, salad, and dessert, this will work.  I’ll try to get a sign-up sheet up, but maybe you could give me a call at 278-1239 before February 5th and tell me what you can bring.

We’d also like to have a Ladies’ Tea in February—we’ll let you know the date soon.

See you all in  February.

Don’t Forget the Food Tub

Because it’s always there, we tend to “not see it” or forget about it.  Remember, many families are still hurting from our economic turndown.  We still need to lend a hand to those less fortunate than we.
