The President’s Message

We’ve all been kind of “taking the summer off” at the Center, as far as organized events and classes go; but already, your Board of Directors is making plans for the busy Fall months ahead.  Ann Evans & Sunny Young have some interesting travel plans in the works (see the travel section on page 4) and plans are being discussed for making some design changes to the front of our building to (1) make it more attractive, (2) make the entryway safer and (3) replace those troublesome front doors to keep out the wind and rain!

Members are encouraged to attend our Board Meetings.

Next Monthly Dinner Meeting:  August 17th—5:30 pm at the Senior Center

Next Board Meeting:  August 19th —3:00 pm at the Senior Center

SHOP MANAGER'S ROUNDUP

I don’t remember it being this hot for so long, but didn’t we have a glorious 4th of July weekend?  I thought I’d do a recap of all the things we have done so far this year:

¨       We opened the shop on January 18th.  It was a slow month for sales, but we had our                          dinner meeting, all the card games, and movies.

¨       We had a spaghetti dinner in February.  It was well attended and we made some money for our general fund.

¨       March was full of all the social things we do

¨       We had a yard sale in April.  April 25th was also the last day Judy Franklin was here, before leaving to start her treatments.

¨       In may, we had a lovely Ladies’ Mother’s Day Tea and once again, we were busy with movies, cards, dominoes, ladies’ brunch and guys coffee group (if you would come!).

¨       June was very busy.  We had the ladies’ Fashion Show and the Chinese Auction and, as usual, we had lots of volunteers to help with everything we did.

Thank you for always being ready and willing to bake a cake or cookies, and do anything else I ask you to help with.  You’re a really great group to work with!

I would like to say a personal goodbye to Marilyn and Paul O’Connor.  They are moving to Tucson, Arizona.  Marilyn, I will miss you.  You have always been so kind and helpful to me in so many ways.

We have had our share of ups and downs—new knees—sicknesses that we’ve recovered from.  The toughest part of all is having to say a “fond farewell” to some of our members.  This is not an easy job, but I love it.  I will be gone from August 6th to the 23rd, off visiting family and some old friends.  Judy Sabella and Judy Reep will be opening the shop during that time, and Nancy Burnett will be “holding down the fort” as our new bookkeeper/treasurer.  She has been doing a fine job with this time consuming and difficult task.  Thank you, Nancy.

If you have not been in to try working out on our Wii fit machine, you are missing out on an entertaining hour.  Everybody—come on down and work out with me…….believe me, you can work up a real sweat and have a lot of laughs doing it!

Hope everyone who came to our July 20th dinner meeting enjoyed meeting “Elvis” the Therapy Dog and his owner; Rosemary Block.  What a neat dog—thank you, Rosemary.

A Word About the November Elections for Board Officers and Members

This year, we will be voting for a new President, Vice-President and Secretary at our Annual Meeting in November.  Nancy Burnett has been appointed as Bookkeeper/Treasurer by the Board (in Judy Franklin’s absence) and has undergone rigorous training for the job.  She will serve her first full term in 2011.

There will also be 2 spots open for Board members other than the officers.  If anyone is interested in running for any of these  offices, please get in touch with someone on the Nominating Committee:  Sunny Young (278-3000), Rosa Grainger (547-1769), or Charlie Jackson (278-1239).

Meet The Members:  Raymond & Esther Kuhn

On a hot July afternoon, I interviewed Ray and Esther Kuhn, who have been members of the Senior Center since shortly after they moved to Oak Island in 1999.  As it happens, Esther was the author of the “Meet TheMembers” page for three years.  “I still miss doing the interviews”, she says, but health problems forced her to forego that chore.                                                                               As many of you remember, her pieces were always well written and helped us become familiar with some of our fellow members. Esther and Ray Kuhn are “children of the depression”.  Esther was born in Geneva, NY on the northern end of Lake Seneca; not far south of Lake Ontario.  Her family made many moves, since her father followed the jobs.  She attended high school at Duke Center, Pennsylvania, just a few miles south of the New York state border.  After high school, Esther attended business school, and according to her instructors, was a “promising student”.   However, as she says, “I didn’t like business school, or that kind of work.”  She married in 1946 and became a mother and housewife.

Ray was born in Camden, NJ; the home of Campbell’s Soup.  His family also did a bit of moving and he lived in Philadelphia and finally, in Doylestown, PA; where he attended school.  Following high school, Ray attended Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA.  He served 2 years in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean War.  His duty took him to Anchorage, Alaska, back in the days before it was a state.  He has worked at many professions during his working years; salesman, dry cleaning, milkman, and construction.

I asked how they met and Esther told me:  “My husband had passed away some time before and I was doing some work in a building that Ray managed – it was part of HUD (Housing and Urban Development).  Ray brought me some vegetables and some berries from his garden.  I thought it was very thoughtful of him and that’s how it started.”  After Ray retired, the two were married, in 1993.  Esther’s daughter and her husband were living in Gastonia, NC, so Ray and Esther moved to our state.  They lived in Shelby, NC for two years, then moved to Oak Island in 1999, right on the heels of Hurricane Floyd.

Esther credits Vangie Peterson with getting her interested in the Senior Center.  Vangie was the Craft Shop Manager at the time and Esther and Ray wanted to get to know people in our area.  They have been members since 2000 and you will see them at nearly every one of our monthly dinner meetings.

Ray and Esther belonged to the Fisherman’s Club for some time and Ray owned his own boat.  I asked about grandchildren and Esther told me that she has six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.  Esther’s granddaughter has been in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the last three years and is a missionary there.  She gave up her career in the computer field to “do some good in the world”.  Ray and Esther are in touch with her via email.

I first met Ray when J. C. Moss started regular table tennis games at our Recreation Center.  He played a “mean game” then, but health problems have curtailed his playing since.  The Kuhns are good people and steady supporters of the Ruth T. Bigham Senior Center.  Say “hello” to them at the next monthly dinner  meeting.

“Meet the Members” is a regular feature of this newsletter and is contributed by Charlie Jackson.

Charlie Needs Help!

Charlie Jackson is our resident computer “guru” and everyone depends on him to maintain the computers at our Senior Center.  He is also constantly overhauling and checking out computers that are donated to us and attempting to help any member who has a computer problem.  Many people in the Center and the community have been the recipients of computers in good working condition at no cost to them, due to Charlie’s efforts!

If there’s anyone out there who would be interested in helping Charlie out with the maintenance and upkeep of                             computers, please contact him at:  278-1239.

The Book Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10 am.  For the next meeting on August 11h, we will read any book with the word “gemstone” in the title.  Examples:  On Agate Hill by Lee Smith; The Black Opal by Victoria Holt; Midnight in Ruby Bayou by Elizabeth Lowell.

Recommended books:

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

The Sacred Blood by Michael Byrnes

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes or other books by Diane Chamberlain

One of your Board Members; Angela Mignella, is a certified Notary Public.  She has volunteered her services—free of charge—to any Senior Center member.  So if you need  anything notarized,   contact Angela.  She may be reached at:  278-1641.

For future reference—if you know of a member of the Senior Center who could use a get well or sympathy card, please notify Pat Cook, Sunshine  Committee, at 619-5745 and she will send one right out!

Military Appreciation Day is an event organized by volunteers to provide a day of fishing for our Active Duty Military, Guard and Reservists. The event also includes activities for their families and a southern style cookout.  MAD 5 Oak Island is taking place on September 11, 2010.

If you would like to volunteer yourself and your boat to help with this effort, or if you want to volunteer in any way, please contact Officer Lee Kent of the Oak Island Police Department at 910-278-5595.  Donations are also needed to help pay for these events for our heroes. No amount is too small and your donations are tax deductible.  We’re proud to report that volunteers from the Senior Center will be joining this effort and we will also make a donation to help defray expenses.  It’s the least we can do for our brave men and women who are defending our country and our liberty.
